Home of about 30% of our membership, Virginia hosted the headquarters of the SAL in Richmond from 1958-1967 and marked the northern terminus of the SAL, ACL and SCL at Richmond. North Carolina hosted the headquarters of the ACL in Wilmington, NC from 1900-1967 while Rocky Mount, NC was the location of the famed Emerson Shops of the ACL and is the current location of the Society’s archives. Portsmouth, VA was the headquarters of the SAL from 1900-1958 and the origin of the Tidewater passenger train. The Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac connected the ACL, SAL, SCL with the Pennsylvania Railroad at Washington Union Station. The region was also the home of much of the railroads’ forest products business.
